Understanding Medicare’s New GLP‑1 Bridge Program

Medicare has introduced an important new initiative—the GLP‑1 Bridge Program—to help eligible beneficiaries access certain GLP‑1 medications while coverage guidelines continue to evolve. These medications, originally developed for diabetes management, have also shown significant benefits for weight‑related health concerns. For years, these highly discussed GLP-1 medications have largely remained out of reach for many Medicare beneficiaries unless they were prescribed for conditions like Type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or cardiovascular disease—and even then, costs could still be substantial.

What Is a GLP‑1 Medication?

GLP‑1 medications are a class of drugs that help regulate blood sugar, support weight loss, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications in individuals with diabetes. You may recognize common GLP‑1 medications like semaglutide or tirzepatide—often prescribed under brand names for diabetes or weight-related conditions.

What Is Medicare’s GLP‑1 Bridge Program?

Under Medicare's new GLP-1 Bridge Program, certain qualifying GLP-1 medications will be available to Medicare beneficiaries at a $50 copay. CMS has announced that specific medications (Wegovy, Zepbound (Kwikpen only), and Foundayo) qualify under the GLP-1 Bridge program when prescribed specifically for weight loss and weight management.

Why Was This Program Created?

Interest in GLP‑1 medications has surged due to their clinical benefits. However, Medicare historically excluded coverage for drugs prescribed solely for weight loss. As research continues to show additional health advantages, Medicare is working to update its coverage policies. The Bridge Program exists to ensure beneficiaries aren’t left without care during this period of change.

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility requirements may vary depending on your Medicare plan and the medical condition being treated. Generally, beneficiaries must:

  • Be enrolled in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription coverage.
  • Meet the program's medical eligibility requirements based on your Body Mass Index (BMI) and/or qualifying weight-related health conditions.

Because requirements vary by plan, checking with your insurance provider—or reaching out to us—is the best way to understand your eligibility.

 Next Steps for Beneficiaries

If you think you may benefit from the GLP‑1 Bridge Program, here’s what to do:

  • Ask your doctor whether a GLP‑1 medication is appropriate for your condition.
  • If your doctor believes that you qualify, they will submit the necessary prior authorization paperwork through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program.
  • Fill your prescription at a participating pharmacy once approved.

Important Notes

  • If one of these medications is being prescribed for anything other than weight loss/weight management (type-2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea), then it will continue to be covered through your Medicare Part D coverage.
  • This program is separate from your Medicare prescription drug plan, so your physician's office should use the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program process rather than submitting the request through your Part D plan.
  • If your Medicare plan has a deductible, it does not apply to this program

Keep in mind that this is a bridge—not a permanent benefit. As of the publication of this article (July 20, 2026), the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has extended the program through December 31, 2027.

The Bottom Line

Medicare’s new GLP‑1 Bridge Program is a significant step toward expanding access to medications that support better metabolic and cardiovascular health. The program is available nationwide for a limited time, but the coverage, eligibility requirements, and medication-specific guidelines can still create confusion. If you have questions about how this program works, if you're eligible, or how this change could impact your costs, I am here to help answer all of your questions.
